What is BOTOX?
BOTOX is a non-invasive, safe way to treat wrinkles, fine lines and furrows by inhibiting contraction of specific muscles in the face. As it requires no down time and produces minimal discomfort or side effects, it has quickly risen to be one of the most popular cosmetic procedures around the world.
BOTOX or Botulinum Toxin is a neurotoxic protein produced by a species of bacteria. It finds application in treating certain muscular conditions. It is also popular in cosmetics for its ability to smooth out wrinkles by paralyzing the muscles causing the wrinkles.

Anti-Aging Treatment:
BOTOX injections must be administered very carefully and preferably under the guidance of an expert. This is why patients from South Bay make their way to Marcus Facial Plastic Surgery. A center with some of the most efficient plastic surgeons. Marcus Facial Plastic Surgery offers some of the safest and efficient results when it comes to BOTOX.
Our South Bay BOTOX blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles, resulting in the targeted muscle's inability to contract. The inability to contract causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. In addition, BOTOX serves as an aging preventative, because the less you are able to move a specific facial muscle, the less you are actively creating new wrinkles.
Most Common Areas Treated with BOTOX:
- forehead lines
- crow's feet (lines around the eye)
- frown lines
- nose wrinkles (bunny lines)
- square jawlines (masseter hypertrophy)
- lip lines
- chin
- corners of the mouth (particularly the downturn)
- neck lines
BOTOX is administered in very small portions by diluting it in saline. The prepared solution is directly injected into the area where the wrinkles have formed. Wrinkles are formed by contraction of muscles. The contraction occurs when a chemical message is sent by nerve endings to the muscles cells. BOTOX inhibits these chemical messages, thus smoothing out the wrinkles. In essence, BOTOX paralyzes the muscles for a short period of time.

View GalleryHow Long will BOTOX Last?
The visible results of our Hermosa Beach BOTOX mature 2-7 days after the injections, and the wrinkle-eliminating effects last 3-4 months, on average. After this point, muscle activity gradually returns to the treated areas, requiring further treatment. The upside, however, is that the fine lines and wrinkles tend to appear less severe with time because they are being trained to relax. That being said, patients may require BOTOX injections less frequently over time while still enjoying the same caliber of results.
How Long Does the Procedure Take?
BOTOX is usually applied without any anesthesia. There is very mild discomfort. The entire procedure takes less than ten minutes. It takes at least three to seven days for the BOTOX to come into full effect. You will begin to notice that the wrinkles on your face begin to smooth out. The effects of BOTOX can last anywhere between three and six months. As said earlier, BOTOX only temporarily paralyzes the muscle and sooner or later, the effect will start to wear out once the muscle activity returns. The procedure can be repeated and in time, the wrinkles will be much less obvious than before as they are being trained to relax.
Is the Procedure Safe?
Being a minimally invasive procedure, BOTOX injections are quite safe. There are no proven side effects and the results are immediate. This being said, it is normal for patients who have undergone BOTOX injections to experience swelling and bruising immediately after the procedure. These are the side effects of the procedure and are quite normal. Your doctor may prescribe painkillers to help ease the pain. Patients are recommended to use ice packs to bring down the swelling.
At times, patients also complain of headaches. Again, this is quite normal and will subside in a few days.
In addition, patients may experience some numbness. This arises when Botox affects the surrounding muscles as well. The effect will gradually wear down.
Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?
Any individual who is eighteen and above, and in good health is an eligible candidate for Botox. Nursing mothers and pregnant women are asked to refrain from the injections in order to avoid any complications.
In addition, patients with any severe or life-threatening neuromuscular conditions are not allowed to undergo the procedure.
Risks and Recovery
BOTOX injections do not require any downtime since it is a minimally invasive procedure. Generally, patients are able to return to their daily activities almost immediately unless instructed otherwise. Patients are, however, asked to refrain from too much physical exertion.
Proper skin care is important. Try to avoid going out into the sun and wear a proper sunscreen when stepping outside.
Patients must refrain from rubbing the area around which the injections have been administered. Any and all instructions given by your doctor must be strictly followed.

Temporary bruising and swelling is the most common side effect of BOTOX injections. Occasionally a patient will complain of minor headaches or cold symptoms, but this is rare and usually lasts only 24-48 hours.
A small percentage of patients may develop eyelid drooping, but again this is rare and only temporary. This usually occurs due to the BOTOX migrating between muscles. Therefore it is important to follow all after-care instructions, including no heavy exercise, laying flat or rubbing of the treated area immediately following your procedure.
