Laser skin rejuvenation or resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure aimed at diminishing the appearance of imperfections on the skin's surface. During the laser skin resurfacing procedure a laser is used to dissolve the molecular bonds of the damaged skin cells layer by layer until a smoother, more even toned appearance is achieved. Laser skin resurfacing has many anti-aging benefits, literally peeling away the damaged layers of skin, leaving behind a more uniformly even, radiant glow.

Types of Laser Skin Resurfacing offered by Dr. Marcus
Dr. Marcus offers 3 distinct types of laser of skin resurfacing in his Redondo Beach practice. All 3 are very effective as an anti-aging, rejuvenating procedure.
DeepFx Laser Treatment
The DeepFx fractional laser is a fractional CO2 laser that reaches deeper into the skin to create a more intense thermal reaction. Heat is the catalyst for new collagen tightening and collagen production, thus improving wrinkles, lines, textural irregularities, and scarring. The DeepFX laser beam is very narrow, with the ability to deeply penetrate the dermis, reaching the stimulatory levels of the dermis. New collagen growth begins and it continues for months to come. Although immediate improvements are noticeable after just one treatment, most patients will reach their maximum results within 3-6 months, resulting in skin that is tighter, smoother, and more radiant. Deep FX laser treatment is administered on an out-patient basis under local anesthesia, and the skin is completely healed within 5-7 days of the treatment.
ActiveFx Laser Treatment
The ActiveFx Fractional Laser treatment is similar to the DeepFx treatment, in that it is a deeply penetrating fractional CO2 laser; however, it is primarily targeted to correct uneven pigmentation, sun spots, pigment discoloration, and fine lines and wrinkles caused by the natural aging process and sun damage.
The ActiveFx fractional laser penetrates the layers of the skin, correcting discolorations, filling in creases or folds, and fading or eliminating other cosmetic imperfections. This particular laser also stimulates the production of collagen over time, ultimately resulting in tighter more radiant looking skin. This too is delivered on an out-patient basis, using local anesthesia and very minimal discomfort. The damaged skin is replaced with new skin in 3 - 5 days.
Fraxel Laser Treatment
Fraxel laser treatment targets only pinpointed areas of the skin, making it less invasive than other forms of skin treatment. Laser skin peels, for example, produce similar results, but they are ablative procedures. This means they work by removing layers of skin with a laser. Chemical peels also remove skin, using mild acids to eliminate cosmetic flaws. However, during Fraxel laser treatment no skin is actually removed. Instead, the laser passes through the epidermis treating thousands of microscopic areas of damaged skin leaving surrounding skin unaffected. This makes recovery much shorter and more comfortable than after chemical or laser peels.
Because the Fraxel laser leaves the surrounding tissue unaffected, no increase in pigment occurs, and this makes it an optimum choice for patients with a darker skin hue, including men and women of African-American, Latino, and Asian decent. For most patients maximum results are seen in just 3-5 sessions.
There is generally no downtime associated with Fraxel laser treatment and most patients can to return to their normal activities almost immediately following the procedure. There will be some dryness and flakiness for several days but a good moisturizer usually makes up for this. Recovery time is short and relatively comfortable. Redness, swelling, and minor irritation may develop (similar to a mild sunburn) however these symptoms often subside in just a few days.
