Q: I am thinking of getting Dermabrasion for acne scarring. Are there other options?
A:There are several options for acne scarring. The optimal treatment depends on your skin type, depth of scar, and afforded downtime. If you have a lighter skin type (Fitzpatrick I, II, or III), dermabrasion, lasers, or surgical excision can all lead to optimal results. One must use more caution when treating darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV, V, or VI); therefore options such as CO2 lasers might be a less optimal choice. It is difficult to tell which procedure is best without seeing the scars. But, if you consult a physician, he or she can help you make this decision. In addiiton, dermal fillers can be used if you want something less invasive than the previously listed options.

A: Yes, you can get rid of wrinkles with a laser but you must engage a trusted physician
who can advise you to the right technology to use. There are a myriad of lasers available
and the technology from one to the next is very different. In my opinion, CO2 lasers are
the best lasers for deep lines and wrinkles. There are also other non-surgical ways to
get rid of deep lines and wrinkles such as chemical peels, dermabrasion, and fillers.

A: That, in part, depends on who performs your facelift. Most people don’t want a
“pulled” or “overdone” look and they are scared to death that this will be the ultimate
result. Contrary to popular opinion, this rarely is the result and in fact, most surgeons
are determined to avoid this look. Most facelifts you see on the street are unnoticeable
and even hair stylists can have difficulty recognizing them. Hollywood starlets are the
minority of patients who have facelifts but their overzealous lifts often give facelifts
a bad name.

A: There is a new FDA approved medication for wrinkles called Dysport. Most articles
I have read and colleagues whom I speak with claim that Dysport migrates further
than Botox after injection. This can be either an advantage or a disadvantage
depending on the site of injection. There are no standard doses for Dysport since it
is relatively new and Botox is still considered the Gold Standard treatment for
dynamic rhytids or wrinkles.
