otoplasty

Overview
Otoplasty is a common cosmetic surgery procedure used to fix
irregularities of the ears. It can reduce the size of the ear, “pin back”
a protruding ear, or change the contour of an ear. Children are good
candidates for otoplasty since the cartilage is still extremely pliable
and their ears are fully grown by the age of five. In addition, there is a
psychological advantage of performing otoplasty at a younger age
because the child will avoid taunting from his peers during early
childhood years. Ear plastic surgery is also an excellent option for
adults. It is indicated for those who suffer from large, protruding ears
or stretched earlobes; however, adult candidates have firmer cartilage
that does not provide the same molding capacity as that of children.
At Marcus Facial Plastic Surgery, our award winning facial plastic
surgeon, Dr. Keith Marcus, offers complimentary consultations for
all patients.
Goal
The goal of Otoplasty is to correct a variety of cosmetic problems of the ears, including ears that are too large, irregularly shaped,
protruding from the head, or asymmetrical. Otoplasty can dramatically improve one’s appearance. Regardless of the patient’s age, this
procedure can help eliminate self-esteem problems that sometimes stem from visible ear deformities. The procedure can also prevent
unnecessary teasing and emotional distress many children experience from having anatomical deformities. During the consultation,
Dr. Marcus will examine the structure of the patient’s ears and discuss the possibilities for correcting the problem while simultaneously
addressing any concerns.
Procedure
There are a number of different options for correcting ear deformities and the proper choice depends on the individual. Once the ears
have reached full size, usually around five years of age, otoplasty can be performed. The surgery typically lasts 2-3 hours and is
performed as an outpatient surgery, rarely requiring a hospital stay. The surgeon will shape or remove cartilage and skin by making a
hidden incision just behind the ear. In some cases, the excess skin and cartilage will be removed to create an aesthetically pleasing
symmetry to the ear. If there is no need for the cartilage to be removed, the surgeon will sculpt the cartilage and apply stitches to hold the
ear in place until it is healed. Some otoplasties are performed without an incision by using needles placed through the skin to sculpt
the cartilage.
Recovery
Recovery time is short and there is minimal downtime with otoplasty. The patient typically takes up to 6 weeks for full recovery; however,
they are usually able to resume normal daily activities after 5-7 days. The patient will wear soft dressings for a few days and may
experience mild pain and some discomfort while sleeping; it is important to sleep on the back during the healing period. Some patients
will be required to wear a cotton headband for up to 2 weeks following the surgery. Results will be immediately visible after the bandages
are taken off and the thin scar will be hidden in the natural crease behind the ear.
